Jean Firth is an award-winning artist from the Borders town of Hawick, living and working in Aberdeen. Jean’s work is primarily a mixture of painting and sewing – influenced by and portraying her family and early life experiences. Through the process of layering, removing, and editing the paintings, Jean turns photos and memories of growing up into mythological events. They begin to drift away from reality, into surreal and tangential forays into remembering and making.
The sewn pieces, formed to imitate the image of the Virgin Mary, have become artefacts of the mother, childhood, and tactile comforts.
Jean graduated from Gray’s School of Art in 2018 and remained in the city to continue making work in her studio at the Northern Arts Club which she shares with several other local artists.
All work is for sale unless otherwise specified.
